About this destination

Known as the 'New Jerusalem,' Lalibela is home to some of the world's most incredible religious architecture, carved entirely from solid rock in the 12th and 13th centuries. The 11 monolithic churches are still active places of worship, connected by a labyrinth of tunnels and trenches. The most famous, Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), is carved in the shape of a cross and stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the Zagwe dynasty.
